Thinking About Adding a Blog to Your Website?

Over the past months, we’ve received a fair number of questions from customers regarding blogs.

Many churches are realizing the impact and potential a blog on their website can have, but just aren’t sure about how to get one started.

A blog is, quite simply, an online communication tool. The first thing you need to determine is a primary purpose of the blog and then possibly a second and/or third purpose of the blog. Next, you need to determine who is going to be the primary author and if you’ll have a team of contributors or just one or two primary individuals.

The purpose of blogs within churches is quite varied, but some of the most common are a pastor’s blog, a community blog for the entire church, a news & events blog, a worship and/or devotional blog and sometimes a youth based blog (although most youth are more into Facebook versus a blog).   How you define success for a blog is equally varied, but all blogs are intended to be updated regularly – a minimum of once a month, with most blogs having posts weekly. If your church or school can commit to a post at least once a month, you can feel confident to start a blog, however, it should be a goal to work at increasing the frequency of posts.

The other part of this is integrating your blog into your website – which you want to do for convenience for your users, and also to capture the Search Engine Optimization that a blog can bring to your website. If you would like to know more of how you can do this, please contact us.

Once you have a blog running, start communicating it throughout your church or organization.

One of the most effective ways to get people in the habit of visiting the blog is to create a series of resources, updates, or similar that will only be found within your blog posts. One church we worked with conducted an online scavenger hunt, while another church posted follow up scripture and sermon notes within their blog posts for a few weeks. Before you announce the blog, be sure to have a couple quality posts already on it so that your users have a feel of what type of information they can expect to find on the blog.
